Midwifery

Our clinicians are committed to promoting women's health through compassionate, patient-centered care. We emphasize the quality of care, as well as the quality of life, and offer customied treatment for all of our patients throughout their care journey with us.

Another option for care is offered through our midwifery service. Rowan Medicine midwives care for women in all stages of life, from the teenage years to post-menopause. They add a unique component to our program, advocating for non-intervention in normal processes and promoting health education for women throughout their child-bearing cycle.

Centering

Over the course of a typical pregnancy, patients participate in 12-15 prenatal visits. CenteringPregnancy® is an optional program that replaces eight of those visits with a group educational program and prenatal care. The bond that is formed between their provider and other expectant women creates a unique, holistic care model for our patients. Find out more about centering below.

More Information About Midwifery

Over the course of a typical pregnancy, patients participate in 12-15 prenatal visits. CenteringPregnancy® is an optional program that replaces eight of those visits with a group educational program and prenatal care. The bond that is formed between their provider and other expectant women creates a unique, holistic care model for our patients.

During Centering, both provider and patient are involved in health assessments. Patients receive one-on-one time and learn to take some of their own assessments, such as weight and blood pressure, their fundal height (size of the uterus), and fetal heart rate tones. This engages them in their own self-care, which is also – ultimately – the care of their child. Engaging activities and facilitated discussions help patients be more informed, confident and empowered to make healthier choices for themselves, their children and their families.

Our patients quickly find comfort in knowing they’re not alone. Participation in group care lessens the feelings of isolation and stress, while building friendships, community and support systems. Expectant moms are grouped with 8-10 other mothers who are due around the same month, so that everyone’s experiences and the education that is shared is relatable.

CenteringPregnancy® is a wonderful resource that provides a well-rounded pregnancy experience for many women and we are proud to offer this service for our patients. CenteringPregnancy® has been proven to:

  • Decrease the rate of preterm and low weight babies.
  • Increase breastfeeding rates.
  • Lead to better pregnancy spacing.
  • Nearly eliminate racial disparities in preterm birth. African American women, who are at higher risk for preterm birth in the US, experience lower risk of preterm birth when enrolled in CenteringPregnancy than in traditional care.

A certified nurse midwife (CNM) is a registered nurse that has attended a graduate level masters program to become a midwife and is an advanced practice nurse or nurse practitioner who provides full scope care in gynecology and obstetrics. They are board certified nationally and have prescriptive authority.

One of the major differences between nurse-midwives and gynecologists/obstetricians is that nurse-midwives offer a more holistic—low tech, high-touch—approach to care. While the medical model of care tends to focus on managing problems and complications through the use of routine care and the use of technological interventions, the midwifery model of care instead focuses on:

  • Health, wellness, and prevention
  • Labor and birth as a normal, physiological process
  • Minimal interventions
  • Individualized care

The ACNM’s Core Competencies for Basic Midwifery Practice recognizes the skills and competencies all new nurse-midwives must possess. This includes integrating the following holistic-focused hallmarks of the practice of midwifery:

  • Recognizing that menarche, pregnancy, birth, and menopause are normal physiologic and developmental processes
  • Advocating for no interventions in the normal process and in the absence of complications
  • Incorporating scientific evidence into clinical practice
  • Promoting woman- and family-centered care
  • Empowering women as partners in healthcare
  • Facilitating the health family and interpersonal relationships
  • Promoting continuity of care
  • Ensuring the implementation of health promotion, disease prevention, and health education
  • Promoting the public healthcare perspective
  • Providing care to vulnerable populations
  • Advocating for informed choice, shared decision-making, and the right to self-determination
  • Integrating cultural humility
  • Incorporating evidence-based alternative and complementary therapies in education and practice
  • Communicating, guiding, and counseling
  • Appreciating the therapeutic value of human presence
  • Collaborating with other members of an interprofessional healthcare team

Certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) provide a full range of healthcare services for women, including:

  • Primary care
  • Gynecologic and family planning services
  • Preconception care
  • Care during pregnancy
  • Childbirth and the postpartum period
  • Care of the normal newborn during the first 28 days of life

CNMs assess, diagnose, and treat patients. Their services also include health promotion, disease prevention, and individualized wellness education and counseling. Some of their duties include:

  • Conducting initial and ongoing physical examinations
  • Ordering and interpreting laboratory and diagnostic tests
  • Prescribing medications, including contraceptives and controlled substances
  • Admitting, managing, and discharging patients

CNMs focus on normal, healthy pregnancies. However, they are educated to recognize the signs and symptoms of less-than-normal conditions and consult with other members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team when problems or issues arise.

Our midwives and doctors will see you prenatally every month until 28 weeks, then every 2 weeks until 36 weeks and then weekly until delivery. We deliver all of our patients at Jefferson NJ.
