Embracing National Recovery Month

A Time for Healing and Hope

road to recovery is written on a highway that is on a scenic route through trees, leading to a sky with pretty cloudsNational Recovery Month, observed every September, is a crucial initiative dedicated to celebrating the journeys of individuals who have overcome substance use disorders and mental health challenges. It shines a spotlight on the power of recovery, emphasizing that healing is possible and that those struggling are not alone.

“Recovery Month is vital because it puts focus on the continued need for substance use disorder resources for those still struggling with addiction,” explains Karen Johnson, program coordinator for Rowan-Virtua NeuroMusculoskeletal Institute (NMI).

By observing National Recovery Month, health care professionals at Rowan-Virtua NMI and across the country hope to combat stigma by fostering a supportive community. By sharing stories of recovery and showcasing the benefits of treatment, this month helps to challenge misconceptions and encourage more people to seek the help they need.

“A recognized month helps because the more we openly talk about addiction and recovery, the more we can honestly address misconceptions and help to further educate people on what recovery is, and how it impacts the whole family structure,” explains Leslie Taylor, a certified peer recovery specialist in Rowan-Virtua NMI who has been in recovery for 19 years.

Here are a few ways individuals and communities can meaningfully observe National Recovery Month:

  1. Share Stories: Use social media platforms to share personal stories or stories of loved ones who have successfully navigated their recovery journey. Highlighting these narratives can provide hope and inspire others who might be struggling.
  2. Attend Events: Many communities host events such as rallies, support group meetings, or educational workshops during September.
  3. Support Local Organizations: Volunteer or donate to organizations that focus on addiction recovery and mental health.
  4. Educate Yourself and Others: Take time to learn about the realities of addiction and recovery. Share this knowledge with friends and family to foster a more understanding and supportive environment.

By actively participating in National Recovery Month, we can all contribute to a more compassionate and informed society, where recovery is celebrated, and every individual is given the chance to thrive.

Rowan-Virtua NMI will host a National Recovery Month event on Friday, September 6, 2024 on the Sewell campus. There will be free literature and giveaways in the first floor lobby from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
